Student Event: Exploring One Health from Students’ Perspectives

On June 11, 2026, a student event entitled “One Health in Practice Through Students’ Eyes” was held at Rakuno Gakuen University.

The OHEPP-SATREPS Project in Tanzania, led by Professor Makita as the principal investigator, has provided undergraduate and graduate students from several Japanese universities with opportunities to gain practical experience in One Health through field activities in Tanzania. At this event, students and graduate students who had participated in these activities shared their experiences from different perspectives, including veterinary epidemiology, human ecology, the JICA Internship Program, and self-funded internships.

Throughout the presentations, a common message emerged: “One Health exists all around us.” The speakers introduced a variety of examples illustrating how challenges involving animals and the environment are closely connected to human activities, and how human behavior can, in turn, influence livestock, the environment, and human health in an interconnected cycle.

More than 60 participants, both in person and online, attended the event and had the opportunity to learn from the diverse experiences and perspectives of the student presenters. The event highlighted that One Health is not merely a concept, but a practical approach that connects people, animals, the environment, and society.
