Message In the Kingdom of Nepal, where he was dispatched for two years as a Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer veterinarian from the Saitama Prefectural Government, he was overwhelmed by poverty. After returning to Japan, he realized that in order to reduce poverty and improve livestock and public health in the world, it was necessary to focus on disease control in populations, and to facilitate collaboration between different sectors such as medicine, veterinary medicine and socioeconomics, and collaboration between different levels such as community, policy makers, and researchers. While searching for a solution, he came across epidemiology.
At that time, there was no epidemiological education and research base in Japan. He obtained a JICA scholarship and studied epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh, through fieldworks in Uganda. Since then, he has taken a problem-centered approach and continues to work on solving many problems through the practice of epidemiology in a wide range of fields both in Japan and overseas.

Message After his PhD work on wildlife disease (molecular) epidemiology, he has been involved with theoretical epidemiology of infectious diseases (human, wildlife, productive animals, and fish), observational studies on non-communicable disease (metabolic diseases of human and productive animals), descriptive epidemiology (Norovirus, HIV/AIDS), ecological studies (human papilloma virus), intervention studies (human anemia), meta-analysis (MERS). In this diversity, all the research topics are connected by four keywords: “epidemiology”, “data analysis”, “management of diseases”, “evaluation of the effect of intervention”. Following to the problem-centered approach, the goal of his research is set to solve the high-priority issues on public health, animal health, and environmental health.
