発展途上国における顧(かえり)みられない人獣共通感染症

 発展途上国には、先進国ではすでに制圧されてしまった風土病的人獣共通感染症が多くあり、経済的にも公衆衛生上も大きな影響を与えていますが、急速に感染が広まる恐れのある鳥インフルエンザやHIV/AIDS、結核といった特定の致死性疾病対策に偏って援助が行われているため、国際保健機関(WHO)から顧みられない人獣共通感染症として指定されている疾病があります。
 蒔田准教授はこのうちブルセラ病に焦点を当て2005年からウガンダで研究を行ってきました。ブルセラ病は世界で最も蔓延している人獣共通感染症の一つで、家畜には流産を起こし、人には持続性、波状型の熱、倦怠感などの全身症状の他、骨関節症などの局所病変を起こします。今後ベトナムおよびタンザニアでも、地域住民とともに持続可能な疾病制御について研究します。
